Please note that just being a member of the
Federation does NOT mean that you are automatically covered by the scheme - you
need to join the scheme and become a paying member of the scheme to
benefit from it. Further details and application forms are
available from the Police Federation Office.
The Gwent Police Federation Group Life Assurance Scheme is open to all police
officers and police staff. It consists of three types of cover – life, income
replacement and travel, taken as a package.
Life Cover
Officers and police staff who join the scheme within three months of joining
Gwent Police, may do so without evidence of health, providing they are fit and
eligible for work. Anyone seeking to join the scheme other than in accordance
with the above paragraph is required to complete an evidence of health personal
declaration. This form is available from the Federation Office. Spouses/partners
applying for cover will also need to complete the health form.

two years. He/she can apply to stay in the scheme after this, but would need to
complete an evidence of health form.
The above premiums include administration and regulatory charges and the cost of
travel insurance and income replacement cover (where applicable).
Income Replacement
In the event of the force cutting a member’s salary to half or nil pay as a
result of absence through sickness or injury, this benefit will pay 20% of gross
basic pay for up to 26 weeks if on half pay and 50% of gross basic pay for a
further 26 weeks if on nil pay. When incapacity benefit and reductions in tax,
national insurance and pension contributions are taken into account, the member
should be left in a similar financial situation to the one that existed before
the reduction in pay.
Cover ceases on retirement or resignation.
Travel Cover
The travel policy provides cover for the subscribing member, spouse (or
co-habiting partner) and their children under the age of 18 years (21 if in
full-time education) normally resident with the member.
Cover is only available to people resident in the UK and is only valid for trips
starting and returning to the UK. All insured persons under the policy are
covered for travelling with or without the main member.
A health warranty applies to the cover and all pre-existing medical conditions
of anyone covered by the policy must be declared to the insurers. They will also
have to be informed of such conditions relating to anyone on whom the trip
depends, e.g. a relative whose illness or death would necessitate cancellation
or curtailment of the holiday.
Cover can continue in retirement but will cease at age 65.
If a member resigns from the force, cover will cease on the date of resignation.
